Modern homes built in the last few decades are designed with open floor plans and vastly increased window space with the goal of adding more natural sunlight. Unfortunately, the design process has a huge flaw. The more additional windows built into newer homes, no matter the window type or quality, actually leads to more energy loss. Think about it for a moment, your walls are made up of an exterior of brick, stucco, or some other type of exterior construction. Next, you have a insulating/moisture barrier, also called a house wrap, followed by a layer of foam or fiberglass insulation. Finally, a layer of sheetrock that make up your inner walls. These four things combined are great at keeping temperatures regulated inside your home. Your biggest energy loss is actually your windows. No matter the window type, or gases that may be filled in your double pane glass, you are still left with two thin panes of glass between you and the outdoors. Many believe that blinds or shutters will keep your rooms cool, in actuality, the best of either of these only block on average 18% of heat.
